As the weather warms up, the landscape begins to turn green. The plants and trees began to grow faster and so does the grass – it will soon be time to mow. Do you have an area that is hard to mow, such as a slope or an odd shaped piece of lawn? A rock garden will turn that difficult area into a beautiful garden feature that will enhance your landscape and your home.

What is a rock garden? In a rock garden, plants are scattered among groups of rocks that are partially buried in the ground so they look as if the rain and wind swept the tops free from dirt. The type of plants in a rock garden range from low-growing ground covers that form mats of color, to small shrubs and flowering plants, to larger specimen shrubs or trees that are used to accent the rock garden

There are different styles of rock gardens from which you can choose – from a small rock garden in a raised bed to a large naturalistic rock garden. You will have a better view of small rock garden plants in a raised bed, and if the walls are built wide enough, you will have extra seating. This type of rock garden can be located near your entranceway, around your patio or as a separate seating area in your garden.

You can build a large rock garden on an unpleasant rocky or hilly area and turn the space into the highlight of your garden. In addition, a large rock garden will help prevent erosion on hilly areas.

Rock gardens are a beautiful addition to water features. You can build a rock garden along the slope of a waterfall or around a pond. Or you can use a fountain to accent a rock garden.

With so many types of rock gardens, you are sure to find one that will improve and beautify your landscape.
