Sometimes, a property just needs the right vision to unlock its full potential. That was the case with this landscape design and installation project in Media, PA, where our team at Cider Mill Landscapes completely transformed an overgrown, unusable hillside into a stunning outdoor retreat.
Reclaiming a Forgotten Hillside
When we first arrived, the slope was held together by rotting railroad ties and buried beneath weeds and debris. It was unsafe, unattractive, and wasting valuable space. Our crew removed the decaying materials and rebuilt the area from the ground up—creating a sturdy, functional foundation for a brand-new landscape.
A Native Wildflower Meadow Above
At the top of the property, we designed and installed a native wildflower meadow that blends seamlessly into the natural surroundings. This space isn’t just beautiful—it’s beneficial, attracting pollinators and providing year-round color with minimal maintenance. Native plants help control erosion and bring a soft, natural aesthetic that ties the property back to the local ecosystem.
Outdoor Living Done Right
Moving down the hillside, we introduced a new flagstone patio as the centerpiece for relaxation and entertainment. The patio flows naturally into a custom-built fire pit – a cozy spot for family gatherings and late-night conversations. Just steps away, the homeowners can cook and entertain in their outdoor kitchen, all while enjoying the sound of a custom waterfall cascading nearby.
Designed to Showcase the Land’s Natural Beauty
From the very beginning, our goal was to create a landscape that worked with the property’s natural features—not against them. Instead of reshaping the hillside, we designed each level to complement the existing slope, using natural stone and native plantings to echo the textures and tones of the surrounding environment. The result is a space that feels effortlessly integrated into the land itself, highlighting its natural contours and character.
The Result: A Space That Works With Nature
What was once a crumbling hillside is now a multi-level outdoor living space that feels like a private retreat. The upper meadow celebrates nature, while the lower patio and kitchen bring people together. It’s the perfect balance of natural beauty and functional design.
At Cider Mill Landscapes, we love helping homeowners reimagine their properties with thoughtful landscape design and installation in Media, PA and beyond. Whether you’re looking to reclaim an overgrown space or create a brand-new outdoor living area, our team can bring your vision to life.
