Some landscape projects are about improving appearance. Others completely change how a homeowner experiences their property. This recent project in Swarthmore, PA did both.
Our clients had a yard with two major problems: an aging retaining wall that was beginning to fail and a buried swimming pool hidden behind it. Together, these outdated features consumed valuable space, created safety concerns, and left the homeowners with very little usable front yard.
The Challenge
The existing retaining wall had deteriorated over time and was no longer providing the support the property needed. Behind the wall was an old swimming pool that had been buried years earlier. Although it was out of sight, it still took up a significant portion of the property and prevented the homeowners from having a functional front lawn.
The layout also made it difficult for visitors to reach the patio from the driveway, limiting accessibility and reducing the overall flow of the landscape.
Our Solution
To completely transform the property, our team performed a full site renovation that included:
- Demolishing and removing the failing retaining wall
- Excavating and removing the buried swimming pool
- Installing a new retaining wall built for long-term stability
- Extending the front steps from the driveway to the front patio
- Regrading the property to create a larger, level front yard
Every element of the project was designed to improve both the safety and functionality of the space while enhancing the home’s curb appeal.
A Yard That Finally Works
By removing the buried pool and replacing the failing wall, we were able to reclaim a significant amount of usable space.
The homeowners now have a level lawn that’s easier to maintain and provides a much more inviting appearance from the street. The new retaining wall offers reliable structural support while creating clean lines that enhance the overall design of the landscape.
What was once an aging, underutilized area has become an attractive front yard that adds beauty, functionality, and value to the home.
Why Replacing a Failing Retaining Wall Is Important
A retaining wall does more than improve the look of your property. It provides critical structural support, helps control erosion, manages drainage, and creates usable outdoor spaces on sloped properties.
If you notice bulging, leaning, cracking, or movement in your retaining wall, it’s important to address the problem before it becomes a larger safety issue.
